ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The former Robertson High School football player, who admitted to sodomizing fellow teammates, will spend time behind bars.

Jarek Padilla was placed in handcuffs as soon as the judge sentenced him Friday. He will serve nine months in a southern New Mexico juvenile detention center.

Before the sentence was handed down, parents of the victims faced the boys that they said took their sons innocence.

“Only some of you chose to disrespect your teammates, and all Cardinals, by terrorizing the young players. Raping and kidnapping these young men is a crime, not a joke, not an initiation,” a victim’s father said.

“Jarek, you committed a very serious crime, rape. And even though they may call it a hazing incident, I call it rape,” a victim’s mother said.

The sentence comes two months after Padilla accepted a plea deal which included rape and conspiracy charges.

The incidents occurred at a summer football camp last August. Five other players also face charges.

On Friday another accused player, Santiago Armijo, said he’s ready to agree to his own plea deal on two counts of attempted criminal sexual penetration.

The deal means Armijo would give up his right to trial.

The four remaining accused will let a jury decide their fate. However, before a court date was set, on Friday their attorneys made one last attempt to get some of the charges dismissed or reduced.

The attorney of Michael Gallegos, the player said to be the ringleader, asked the judge to reduce multiple rape charges to aggravated assault because the acts were done over clothing.

The judge disagreed and said no.

Gallegos’ attorney then asked the judge for separate trials because he has concerns that comments from other defense attorneys might damage Gallegos’ chances for a fair trial.

The judge shot down that request as well.
